Fifty Shades of Grey Final Review

Our meeting on Saturday was a great success!  We had a blast and everyone was so creative with their food and apparel.  Thanks to everyone who came out to our meeting on Saturday, especially our three new members!

Here is our final review for Fifty Shades of Grey.  If you missed the first review, you can find it here.  As always, spoilers ahead.  Read at your own risk.

The second half of the book is where the sex gets kinky and the book gets ridiculous.  In it, Ana gets spanked, runs away to her mother, gets stalked by the guy she's running away from, takes him back, gets hit for real and dumps Christian.  And you figure out how messed up Christian actually is.  He becomes so absurd that you completely lose any sympathy you have for the character.  Many of the ladies in the group who had read the two sequels said that you have to read them in order for Christian to make more sense.  The problem with this is that James's writing is so poor and the fact that I'd lost any interest in the characters makes it nearly impossible for me to go out and pick up the other two.

For those people who didn't care about the poor writing and lack of plot that the first half brought, they won't be disappointed in the second half of the book.  The sex is steamier and we finally get to read about what goes on in the "Red Room of Pain".  All-in-all, reading Fifty Shades of Grey is both pleasure and pain.

Discussion Questions
  • Did your opinions of any of the characters change between the first and second halves of the book?
  • What did you think of Ana's mother?  What about the advice she gives her about following her heart?
  • What did you think about the book has a whole?
  • What do you think of the hoopla surrounding the book?  Is it warranted?  Is it as dirty/liberating/demeaning, etc. as people say?
  • Have you read the next two books, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed?  If you haven't, do you think you will?

  1. Thank you for another great review!
My opinion of the characters didn't really change as the story went along, I thought that Ana was a fool and Christian was a jerk. I was really glad when she came to her senses at the end and left him. This guy enjoyed hurting Ana...he hurt and humiliated her in her own home!
The advice that Ana's mom gave her seemed to just be one cliche' after another. Her advice might have been better if she had actually known what was going on.
I honestly don't know why this book is getting so much hype, maybe it's the Twilight thing. If someone wants a steamy book, a Harlequin romance would probably be better because this book was just a steaming pile.
